Young Musicians Take the Spotlight at CCM's Accent07 Festival
As summer settles in, a flood of sensory experiences overtakes us -- its smells, sights, feelings, and, just as powerful, its sounds. The whistle of birds, a poolside splash, the peal of the ice cream truck -- each iconically "summer."
And for one intense week in June, CCM event organizers vie to add "wall-to-wall music" to that list. From June 10 through 17, aspiring instrumentalists and composers from throughout the Cincinnati area convene on the UC campus for Accent07, CCM's annual chamber music festival for young artists. Here, high school and college-age artists step up their know-how through immersion in a vibrant, hands-on program of music study.
Organized by Artistic Director and violist Dorotea Vismara Hoffman, the Accent07 curriculum offers participants the opportunity hone their skills under the tutelage of accomplished musicians. Each day includes lessons and master classes guided by prominent performing artists, including CCM faculty members Michael Chertock (piano), James Culley (percussion) and Rodney Stucky (guitar); Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra musicians Timothy Lees (violin, concertmaster), Gabriel Pegis (violin) and Christopher Philpotts (English horn); Apollo's Fire concertmaster Jennifer Roig-Francolí (violin); and guests Alison Acord (voice, Miami University), Karen Schneider (French horn, freelance), Anthony Elliott (cello, University of Michigan), Kypros Markou (violin, Wayne University), David Updegraff (violin, Cleveland Institute of Music) and Augusto Vismara (viola, Florence Conservatory, Italy).

Participants then put their study into practice by
performing in concert events
, showcasing works by an array of composers throughout the week.
All concerts take place on the CCM campus and are free and open to the public.
(See a complete schedule below.)
Accent07 runs in parallel to Music07, CCM's festival of new music for professional musicians and graduate students. In addition to shared faculty and master classes, Accent07 students are invited to join Music07 participants as well as the general public for nightly, free-of-charge concerts, featuring the work of such noted composers as Michael Nyman, Frederic Rzewski and Zygmunt Krause and performances by esteemed ensembles eighth blackbird and the Amernet Quartet.
