CCM Prep Presents 'Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'
The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Preparatory Department presents the musical Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn July 13 through 15 in CCMs Cohen Family Studio Theater. Mark Femia directs this adaptation of Mark Twains classic novel with music and lyrics by Roger Miller and book by William Hauptman. The musical is perfect for audiences of all ages and features a cast composed of talented area high school students.
Big River sweeps audiences down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Propelled by an award winning score from Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.
It is great to have the chance to work with these 30 teenage singers and actors on a fun and fascinating piece of theater, states Femia. With a familiar story, a great score and important messages about family and friendship, it is truly an enjoyable production that I think everyone will love. And what could be better than to bring Big River to our river city of Cincinnati?
Big River was originally produced on Broadway in 1985 and won eight Tony awards, including Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. The show was revived for Broadway in 2003 by the DeafWest organization, featuring hearing-impaired performers with sign language interpreters, and won three Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical.
