Lifelong Learning Courses to Begin in January

“Lifelong learning” isn’t just a phrase that describes continuous awareness and consumption of knowledge. It also refers to the intentional gathering of interesting information about the world around us.

The University of Cincinnati has a way for alumni and others to easily maintain this fascinating lifestyle. It’s called the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC (OLLI) thanks to a significant grant from the Osher Foundation last summer. OLLI is the current manifestation of the former Institute for Learning in Retirement and the Institute for Lifetime Education.

Starting January 22, 2008, OLLI will be offering classes on a wide variety of topics. Adults aged 50 and older are invited to sign up for any number of eight-week courses for a single fee of $75. Classes are held at UC’s Uptown Campus at Tangeman University Center, at Raymond Walters College in Blue Ash, and other convenient suburban locations.

Several UC alumni will be moderating in the winter, including Sam Hollingsworth on “A Brief History of Art Through the Eyes of the Art Maker,” Heather Arden on “The Joy of Schubert,” and Rollin Workman on “Ideas in Philosophy.”

Sam Hollingsworth, a graduate of UC’s internationally recognized College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, paints primarily in watercolor, teaches in the medium as well, and maintains a studio in Newport, Ky.  His Thursday 9 a.m. class at UC’s Uptown Campus looks at art history by posing questions that a practicing artist might have, starting with cave painting and continuing to the present day.

OLLI is always looking to add to its roster of course moderators.  It’s a great opportunity for retired or active professors to continue teaching their area of specialty or interest, in a volunteer capacity, to a mature audience.

For information, call the OLLI office at 513-556-9186, visit the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute online, or call board member Sally Moore at 513-984-2059.
