Seniors Take a Swing at Building a Bearcat on Campus

The temperatures were below the ideal degree for swimming weather, but the skies cleared for the “Goodbye to UC Dunking Booth,” sponsored by the Senior Class Officers.

James Radley and Jared Brandyberry, the outgoing Student Body President and Vice President, both made successful throws at dunking UC Football Coach Brian Kelly.

UC President Nancy L. Zimpher joined the fun and tried a couple of tosses at Charlie Scruggs, an academic advisor in the Division of Student Services for the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services.

The May 20 event on McMicken Commons featured food, entertainment from the Bearcast student radio station and goody bags filled with portfolios and water bottles from the Senior Year Experience Program.

The UC Alumni Association provided free softdrinks and gift cards for students who signed up for the inCircle online networking site for UC alumni.

The crowd was invited to pay a dollar to dunk a professor to raise money for the senior class gift. For a gift of $20, seniors received an official Class of 2008 T-shirt. The Senior Class Officers are proposing a Bearcat statue for campus in conjunction with help from Sigma Sigma.

Jerry Tsai, a UC senior political science major and one of the organizers of the event as he serves an internship with the UC Foundation, says today’s event raised more than $300 toward the senior class gift.

Natalie Kohne, Senior Class President, says the event was a way for seniors to “come out and have some fun” as they neared graduation, as well as an opportunity to say thank you to the university.

Tsai adds that seniors can contribute to the Senior Class Gift throughout the summer by going online.
