CCM Welcomes Summer with Learning and Performance Opportunities for Participants of All Ages

Summer at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) features educational workshops for budding artists as well as special performance events throughout the season. Please see below for a complete schedule of interactive workshop opportunities and special events.

ON-CAMPUS WORKSHOPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

Music08 / June 15-22
Music08 is a unique and intensive new music festival. Several CCM and guest artists will be joined by guest composers Steve Reich, Jack Body and Frederic Rzewski, all of whom will be working with an invited group of young composers, both students and professionals, as well as young performing musicians. Selected chamber works by these young composers will be rehearsed, performed and recorded, under the guidance of the guest artists. Concurrently, the participants and guest artists will prepare and perform twentieth-century chamber music classics. The new and not-so-new pieces will be performed in a series of concerts throughout the festival that are free and open to the public. Please visit the Music08 Web site for a complete schedule.

Accent08 / June 15-21
Accent08 is a chamber music festival for college-age musicians (and advanced high school students) featuring daily private lessons, classes and orchestra rehearsals with internationally renowned artist-faculty. The concurrent Crescend08, a division of Accent08, is a complementary program geared toward outstanding high school and middle school musicians. Cincinnati Flute Symposium / June 30-July 4
The Symposium presents an opportunity for participants to rehearse, take lessons, participate in master classes, and perform in recital with some of the nation's most celebrated flutists. Participants and performing auditors are chosen by taped audition. Every age and performance level is encouraged to apply. The 7 days will focus on all aspects of performing, including solo repertoire, technique, chamber music, orchestral literature and piccolo technique. In addition, several leading flute manufacturers will exhibit their instruments for attendees to view and try. At the end of the Symposium, attendees vote on the top three performing participants based on the 6 days of master classes. Prizes of $750, $500, and $250 are awarded. The winners will perform in the Gala Closing Concert on the last Sunday afternoon of the Symposium.

Conducting Workshop / July 22-25
This workshop is designed to address the needs of today's public school conductors/educators. Each conducting opportunity will be videotaped, followed by one-on-one critique sessions. Special emphasis is placed on score preparation and analysis, left and right hand interaction, mixed meter conducting and rehearsal techniques.

Classical Guitar Workshop / July 28-August 3
The Classical Guitar Workshop is open to players of all ages and skill levels, offering a rich environment that builds confidence and provides perspective. Guitar enthusiasts participate in master classes, ensembles and technique classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. There are special sessions on early music, Latin styles, individual composers, arranging for guitar and more. Recitals are performed by faculty ensembles, guest soloists and chamber musicians, as well as participants.

Grandin Festival / August 10-29
The Grandin Festival is a three-week session offering study and performance of vocal and instrumental chamber music for young artists under the guidance of internationally renowned guest artists, coaches and CCM faculty. The festival features a number of free, public concert performances by participating artists.

Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca (Italy) / June 15-July 19
Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca is a five-week comprehensive Italian study and performance program set in the Tuscan city of Lucca. Over 100 young artists are selected to work with a 35-member international faculty. OTMFL is pleased to announce that in our 2008 season, the opera production will be Puccini's La Bohme. Throughout the festival, more than 20 additional vocal, orchestral and chamber concerts are performed against the backdrop of the sunny and stunning landscape of Tuscany.

Musical Theater Experience, for ages 8-12
This camp is an introduction to acting, singing, dancing and basic on-stage techniques for students with little or no theater experience. Limited to 80 students.

Camp Curtain Call, for ages 8-14 [PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS CLOSED.]
Both two-week musical theater camps perform The Pirates of Penzance, Jr. Campers must have previous theater experience. Audition required.

High School Acting & Musical Theater Workshop for ages 14-18
This theater training program for high school students has sessions on acting, voice, movement, dance, music skills, improvisation, stage combat and more. The workshop is three weeks long, with an option to only participate in the first week.

Standing Room Only (Special Learners)
Everyone needs their time in the spotlight! This two week camp will give special learners their much deserved time as the campers work together to produce a short musical theater presentation.

10 a.m.-noon ages 7-10; 1 p.m.-3 p.m. ages 11-14
Fee: $100

Summer Jazz Band, for grades 9-12
CCM Jazz and Prep sponsor this Jazz Camp, which includes classes in jazz theory and improvisation and concludes with a performance. Spots are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cincinnati Piano Institute
CCM Prep piano faculty offer the fourth annual week-long piano institute. All piano students, as well as students interested in beginning piano study, are welcome to participate. Students may participate in the Chamber Music part of this program for an additional $35. Chamber Music rehearses from 3:10  p.m.-3:50 p.m.
July 15-21: 9a.m.-noon for kindergarteners; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. grades 1-8
Fee: $250 for kindergarten; $300 for grades 1-8

Summer Band Experience
The band will be featured in concert at the end of the camp. Open to all woodwind, brass and percussion players who have completed fifth through seventh grade and have been playing their instrument for at least one year.

Cincinnati Children's Choir Festival, for 3rd-8th grades
Young singers interested in enjoying and developing musicianship skills are welcome to participate in this festival.
