"Moonlighting" Sonata: CCM Assistant Dean of Admissions Paul Hillner Pulls Double Duty as Conductor of Preparatory Brass Choir

By day, Paul Hillner, CCM's assistant dean for admissions and student services, leads the college's efforts to recruit the best and brightest young musicians from throughout the country and the world. In his free time, Hillner moves from behind the desk to center stage, serving as conductor of CCM's Preparatory Brass Choir, composed of outstanding high school brass players from the Tristate.

On Wednesday, June 11, the Prep Brass Choir celebrates 30 years under Hillner's direction with a free concert at 8 p.m. in CCM's Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

The concert will feature current members and alumni of the CCM Preparatory Brass Choir performing works by noted composers including Leo Arnaud, Johann Christoph Pepusch, Richard Wagner and more. The program will close will spectacular triple brass choir piece by Gioanni Gabrieli entitled Et in Terra Pax.

When Hillner joined the Preparatory Brass Choir in 1978, he was in the process of completing a master's degree in wind conducting after receiving his bachelor's at CCM in 1974. Since 1979 Hillner has been working in admissions at CCM. Over three decades, his dedication to the Brass Choir has been inexhaustible, and he has helped shape the musical experiences of more than 275 students who have been members of the choir.
