New STEM School Set to Open on Aug. 19

It will be a day filled with food, fun and information about Cincinnati Public Schools’ new STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) school this Saturday, Aug. 9, when William H. Taft Elementary hosts a community day for current and prospective students and their parents. The festivities will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school located at 270 Southern Avenue in Mt. Auburn.

William H. Taft Elementary was recently restructured into a STEM school serving students in grades Pre K-8 with a curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year, the school opens with a new principal, CPS veteran Donna Fields, an entirely new staff and a long list of community partners who will help teachers bring STEM concepts to life for students.

Created in partnership with the University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers and several business partners, the school starts a seamless pathway from kindergarten to college so that children master the lucrative STEM fields, which are essential in a 21st century job market. Upon completion of the 8th-grade, students automatically are eligible to attend Hughes Center, which is being restructured as the district’s STEM high school.

In addition to a rigorous curriculum, students will take advantage of numerous field experiences with business partners – such as General Electric, Duke Energy, Procter & Gamble, and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden – whose facilities will double as learning laboratories. Students will have daily access to digital commons, which are state-of-the-art science and technology areas. The digital commons will feature laptop computers, desktop computers, videoconferencing, video streaming and Internet-based applications. In addition, students will enjoy a full array of enrichment opportunities, including daily art and music instruction, physical education and numerous clubs and other extracurricular activities.

The celebration on Aug. 9 will include a special appearance from UC’s Bearcat mascot. There also will be several games for children to enjoy. School officials will host information sessions every hour, beginning at 11 a.m., for parents who are interested in enrolling their children.
