Sunday Webcast in Windows Media
UC Convocation, the universitys formal induction into the university, will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. Doors to Fifth Third Arena open at 12:30 p.m. Students should convene no later than 1:15 p.m. at the Armory Fieldhouse.
UC President Nancy L. Zimpher will lead Convocation, which kicks off a series of Welcome Week events before classes get underway at UC on Sept. 24. UC faculty and administrators, dressed in their full academic regalia, will also take part in the ceremony.
The 2008 new student class will be addressed by Thane Maynard, executive director of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Sarah Leggesse, UC director of Orientation Services, says new students can expect a Convocation visit from Lucy, the zoos baby bearcat, as well as another special animal guest from the zoo. The visit is a preview to UC Night at the Zoo, which will be held exclusively for the UC community students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
New students will also be addressed by Student Body President Ryan Rosensweig at Convocation. The Student Orientation Leaders (SOLs) who guided the new students through their summer orientation will be standing by to welcome back the new students as they enter the Convocation ceremony.
The SOLs have been at work on preparing the class banner that the new students worked on during Orientation. The banner is composed of 204 flags depicting the new students vision of the UC Just Community initiative to practice civility and social action. In addition to that introduction to Just Community, students were encouraged to contribute to the first Bearcat-Bound Canned Food Drive during summer orientation as well as at Convocation. Leggesse says so far, 1,400 cans of food have been collected to be distributed by Matthew 25 Ministries, an international humanitarian relief organization based in Cincinnati and founded by UC alumnus Wendell Mettey.
Students will also receive a copy of the The Red & Black book created by the UC Student Alumni Council, which highlights the historical, cultural and social perspectives of what it means to be a Bearcat. Students will also receive a voter registration card along with voter instructions as part of a student-led effort to promote the big vote in November.
