Joy and Pain of Adolescence Drive CCM's Provocative Drama 'Spring Awakening' Oct. 29-Nov. 2
The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) launches its 2008-09 Mainstage Series with the stirring drama
Spring Awakening
, written by Frank Wedekind. A provocative expression of the adolescent experience,
Spring Awakening
explores the moral complications and angst that exist on the border of childhood and adulthood. Performances take place in Patricia Corbett Theater on the CCM campus Oct. 29 (preview) through Nov. 2.
Spring Awakening
deals with a group of schoolchildren just entering the age of pubertyimaginative beings speculating about the mysteries of life. Through their coming-of-age experiences, the play delves into themes of sexual awakening in direct and powerful ways.
Written in 1891 and considered scandalous in its time, Wedekinds forward-thinking work conjures issues we face in 21st-century culture, asserting that childrenthen and nowcannot be sheltered from lifes hardships and dangers. Its timelessly relevant story inspired the musical version that is currently running on Broadway to great critical and public acclaim, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2007.

UC College-Conservatory of Music Interim Dean Jonathan Kregor has announced the appointment of Kristy Swift, PhD and DMA, to the position of Assistant Professor of Music Studies at CCM. In this role, Swift will lead the Bachelor of Arts in Music program offered through CCM's Division of General Studies. The appointment is effective Aug. 15, 2024.
