UC Clermont selected for SkillsUSA National Pilot

UC Clermont College has been selected to participate in the SkillsUSA national pilot. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. This pilot places a large emphasis on service learning.

SkillsUSA’s mission is an applied method of instruction for preparing America's high performance workers in public career and technical programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development.

"We are proud that UC Clermont College was selected for this national pilot.  Career skill competition, leadership development and service learning create wonderful opportunities of growth for our students," said Victoria Hammer, associate dean of academic affairs.
 
Faculty members Dee Kinney, Dexter Hulse and Carolyn Vining have transformed their traditional classes into SkillsUSA-service learning courses.  Students are learning more about Health Care Edge and first responder curricula by working with Clermont Senior Services and the Boys & Girls Clubs.  Students in computer aided drafting classes are dealing with issues concerning poverty.
 
A SkillsUSA chapter has been established on campus with 64 participating students.  The following students have been elected as officers: Kevin Burroughs of Williamsburg is president; Jocelyn Ford Corbin of Mt. Orab is vice president/parliamentarian; Mike Faulkner of Bethel is treasurer and Amanda Gilliam of Anderson is secretary.
 
“SkillsUSA’s emphasis on workforce development, leadership and service learning will give UC Clermont students many advantages including enhanced educational opportunities.  Most of all, students will gain a wonderful competitive edge in landing great jobs in an increasingly difficult job market,” said Barbara Wallace Director, College Success Program.
