McMicken Remembers Alum and Donor Greenholz

As a McMicken alumna and scholarship recipient herself, Sarah Blank Greenholz wanted to give back to the university community. After receiving her BA and MA in education from UC in 1940 and 1959, Greenholz established two annual scholarships for students at UC, one for a student in McMicken and the other for a student in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services.

She spent her career in secondary education math, first as a high-school math teacher in Cincinnati Public Schools, then as a supervisor of mathematics for the Board of Education.

Greenholz died at her home in Hyde Park on Oct. 31. She was 89 years old.

She is remembered for her attendance at the annual McMicken award ceremony, where she personally handed each scholarship recipient his or her award.

“Sarah (or Sally, as she was known to her friends), sponsored a number of significant scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences, and we always honored her and her late husband Richard, at our awards dinners in May,” said Bob Fee, former senior assistant dean in the college, who went to Woodward High School between 1954-1958 while Greenholz worked there as a math teacher.

“I had the honor of choosing recipients of her scholarships, and it was always pleasant to remind her of our Woodward High school connection,” Fee said.
