New Book Features Photo of UC s Musical History
A new addition to a book series on musical literature has a UC connection. The books cover features an image of the University of Cincinnati Glee and Mandolin Club from the year 1900, and was provided to the Music Library Association (MLA) Index and Bibliography Series by UCs Archives and Rare Books Library.
The book, The Guitar in American Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar Periodicals, 1882-1933, authored by Jeffrey Noonan, associate professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University, is number 35 in a series of the MLA publications and was edited by Mark Palkovic, senior librarian and head of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Library.
I chose the photo because it shows men and women using the guitar to make music together at UC 100 years ago, says Palkovic. CCMs guitar department under Professor Clare Callahan demonstrates UCs ongoing commitment to guitar studies.
The series, co-published by the MLA and A-R Editions, features bibliographies, indexes, discographies and other guides covering all areas of music.
