CCM's Department of Drama Presents 'Transmigration: A Festival of New Student-Created Work' Feb. 19-21
Students in CCMs drama program are taking big risks.
Since December 2008, theyve been tasked with creating entirely original stage works for a mini-festival called
Transmigration
, making its debut at CCM this year.
The festival draws its name from the word meaning the movement from one place to another or the transition from one state of being to another. It has been envisioned by department chair Richard Hess not only as a rigorous creative exercise for his student actors, but also as an opportunity for them to expand their experience with every aspect of bringing a work to life.
Nearly every CCM drama major plays a role in
Transmigration
sophomores, juniors and seniors have been assigned to one of six student teams. Each team has been charged with creating a work completely from scratch, collaborating fully to develop a concept, story, characters and script. Each team also has received a $60 budget to spend as theyd like, be it on props, set pieces, costumes or marketing.
From these teams, six new 30-minute plays have been developed, all of which will be performed over one weekend at CCM.
Transmigration
will follow a Fringe Festival-like format, with works occurring simultaneously and in rotation throughout various and unexpected spaces. For each day of the festival, it will be possible for an audience member to see up to four different plays of their choosing.
Says Hess, Audiences can expect the unexpected. The envelope will not be pushed, it will be ripped wide open."
