UC College of Law to Hold 176th Annual Hooding Ceremony on May 10

The 2008-09 academic year for the UC College of Law will wrap up on Sunday, May 10, when the college sends off its newest 111 graduates at its 176th annual Hooding Ceremony.

This year’s event takes place in Procter & Gamble Hall at the Aronoff Center in downtown Cincinnati, with the ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. (More details on the Hooding Ceremony itinerary can be found on:

The speaker for this year’s ceremony is Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Cris Collinsworth, a 1991 graduate of the college and the lead analyst for NBC’s coverage of the National Football League.

The honoree for this year’s Nicholas Longworth III Alumni Achievement Award is Bridget Gannon McGraw, a member of the class of 2003 and currently counsel for the General Electric Co.’s aviation supply chain. She has also been very active in volunteering in the Cincinnati legal community and with the UC College of Law.

Also being honored are this year's winners of the Goldman Prize for Excellence in Teaching. This year's winners are Professors Margaret B. Drew, Darrell A.H. Miller and Thomas D. Eisele.

Collinsworth will be joined on the podium by UC College of Law Dean Louis D. Bilionis, who will oversee the ceremony, and by several members of the faculty selected in balloting done by the graduating class: the Faculty Reader will be Professor Emily Ming-Sue Houh; the Faculty Hooder will be Professor A. Christopher Bryant and the Faculty Assistant Hooder will be Professor Christo Lassiter.

In an ongoing tradition, the college also allows for “guest” hooders, providing the person is a direct relative of the graduate and is also an alumnus of the UC College of Law. This year, seven members of the graduating class will be receiving their hoods from a family member, including Emily Meier Walters, who will be hooded by her grandfather, Robert Greene, who graduated from the UC College of Law 50 years ago this year.

The other guest hood participants include:

  • Gina Cioffi, who will be hooded by her father, Michael Cioffi, Class of ‘79
  • Brandon Craig, who will be hooded by his mother, Constance Hill, Class of ‘79
  • Amanda Shoemaker, who will be hooded by her father, Kevin Shoemaker, Class of ‘79
  • Lucy Wasmund, who will be hooded by her uncle, John P. Williams Jr., Class of ‘66
