UC Hosts International Conference in Fuzzy Logic That s Certain

The University of Cincinnati hosts the

28th North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society Annual Conference

, being held on UC's West and East Campuses June 14 through 19.

Papers from researchers in approximately 30 countries have been submitted to the conference.

“Even with the current very tough economic conditions and the swine flu scare, we are seeing a healthy participation in the conference, with more that 100 registered participants,” says conference organizer, Professor Anca Ralescu of UC’s Computer Science Department in the College of Engineering.

Professor Lotfi Zadeh, of the University of California, Berkeley, founder of the fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic, will deliver the opening keynote speech.

“Fuzzy logic” refers to the concept that the world isn’t necessarily binary — despite what we might expect from our knowledge of computers. There are degrees of truth, rather than just two states. Although some research had taken place earlier, Zadeh first coined the term “fuzzy logic.”

In his keynote address, Zadeh will discuss how fuzzy logic adds to bivalent logic an important capability — a capability to reason precisely with imperfect information. Imperfect information is information that in one or more respects is imprecise, uncertain, incomplete, unreliable, vague or partially true.

A free tutorial will be offered from 4:40 to 6:40 p.m. on June 14, called “Fuzzy Neural Computing Systems: Theory and Applications.” This tutorial is open to the public, but participants must register ahead of time. Registration to the tutorial is limited only by the capacity of the auditorium (427 ERC, UC Uptown West Campus).

The sessions held June 15 through 19 take place at the Kingsgate Marriott on UC’s Academic Health Center Campus.

The conference is not open to the general public. However, a very limited number of one-day registrations may be available. Those interested should contact the general chair, Professor Anca Ralescu, UC College of Engineering, Computer Science Department, at Anca.Ralescu@uc.edu or 513-556-4752.

The major sponsor of the 28th North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society Annual Conference is the Ministry of Technology and Education of Azerbajan. Other sponsors besides the University of Cincinnati are IEEE, NAFIPS, Omron and Eastern Washington University.
