Thousands of Visitors Expected at UC for Open House on Presidents Day

A winter school-day break for high-school students results in bigger crowds swelling UC’s record student population, as high-school visitors and their parents arrive for the University of Cincinnati’s Presidents Day Open House. The crowds first arrive to browse information fairs that get underway at

8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, in the Tangeman University Center (TUC) Atrium and lobby of TUC’s Great Hall.

The formal welcome and program sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m.

Thomas Canepa, associate vice president for UC Admissions, says that because of the event’s growing popularity, this year’s open house was split into two different sessions. “We offer these opportunities to not only showcase the dynamic transformation of campus, but also to highlight the variety and excellence of our academic offerings,” says Canepa, who adds that fall campus visits were up 25 percent from the previous year.

The event, presented by UC’s Office of Admissions, provides an opportunity for future college students to

• Meet with UC faculty and staff
• Learn about majors, admissions, financial aid and campus life
• Visit the college that most interests the prospective student
• Get a tour of campus and a residence hall

Approximately half of the student visitors are high school juniors checking out prospects as they plan to enter college in fall 2011. Canepa says the other half are students entering college in the fall and making their final choice of where to attend.

Applications to UC’s Uptown Campus for the coming fall are up 12 percent over last fall and total university applications (including applications to UC’s branch campuses) are up 12.4 percent.

Last fall, UC reported an overall student enrollment of 39,667, up seven percent from August 2008 and the highest student enrollment recorded at UC since 1980. UC’s fall freshman class was 6,200, the largest in UC’s history.
