VIDEO: UC Class of 1970 Marches to Glory
A lot has changed in the last 40 years at the University of Cincinnati. On Friday, one more thing changed the Class of 1970 finally got the send-off that a lot of them had never experienced.
The UC Alumni Association arranged for a special Commencement ceremony for members of the Class of '70, who saw their college careers wrap-up under extraordinary circumstances. The tragedy of the Kent State University and Jackson State University shootings had just taken place in May of 1970, greatly inflaming the already sizable protest movement against the Vietnam War. Many schools, including UC, were forced to halt classes and send students home to deal with the unrest that spread across college campuses that May.
UC was back in school in time to have a Commencement ceremony in June of 1970, but many graduates, because of distance back to Cincinnati or their feelings about the protests, did not attend graduation. Friday's ceremony finally helped fill that gap for those who had not had the formal celebration of their college achievements that would have resulted in less-turbulent times.
