UC Highlighted in the Princeton Review's Best Colleges Book

The University of Cincinnati is among the nation’s best institutions for a college education, according to The Princeton Review’s 2011 edition of its annual college guide, “The Best 373 Colleges.”

Only about 15 percent of the nation’s four-year colleges are featured in the book, which is the Princeton Review’s flagship college guide.

UC student surveys in The Princeton Review praised UC’s campus as “an urban oasis of amazing architecture,” with amenities galore. Students also praised the Cincinnati area as holding a huge variety of excellent employers as well as an excellent environment for raising a family.

“We commend UC for its outstanding academics, which is the primary criteria for our selection of schools for the book,” says Robert Franek, vice president and publisher of The Princeton Review. “Our choices are based on institutional data we collect about our schools, our visits to schools over the years, feedback from students attending the schools, and the opinions of our staff and our 28-member National College Counselor Advisory Board.”

UC scored solid ratings in The Princeton Review for quality of life (how happy students are outside the classroom), fire safety and its green initiatives – a measure of the school’s performance as an environmentally aware and responsible institution.

“This year’s edition of ‘Best Colleges’ reinforces several areas in which UC has received other national recognition – a beautiful and ‘green-sensitive’ campus, strong academics, real-world experiences and diversity ‘writ large,’” says Caroline Miller, senior associate vice president for enrollment management. “With significant increases in applications and campus visits, it is clear that UC is a campus of choice,” Miller says.

UC’s diverse student body was highlighted not only in terms of different ethnicities, but also in its representation of older students as well as students from varying economic backgrounds. The students quoted in the book say the campus is a “vibrant quilt of culture” that feels “very realistic.”

The Princeton Review has posted the school profiles for “The Best 373 Colleges” online.

Online applications for 2011 are now open. Applications must be received by Dec. 1, 2010 for scholarship consideration.
