UC Students Begin the Move Back to Campus on Sept. 16

University of Cincinnati students begin classes on Sept. 22, but will move in to the residence halls Sept. 16-18. Hundreds of volunteers – including UC faculty and staff in the Helping Hands and Bear-ginnings programs as well as UC students who moved back to campus early to work with the Hall Opening Team (HOT) – will help with directions, moving carts and drinks of ice water.

More than 3,900 students are expected to move into UC housing this fall. Todd Duncan, director of UC Housing & Food Services, says UC’s housing system, which can accommodate a maximum of 4,000, is in overflow as it typically is at the start of fall quarter. This results in some of the study lounges being converted into temporary housing to accommodate the demand.

Residence Hall Openings (Peak crowds expected between 10 a.m. and noon)

Thursday, Sept. 16, 10 a.m. – Daniels, Siddall and Stratford Heights
Friday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. – Calhoun, Dabney, Turner and Schneider Halls
Saturday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. – Campus Recreation Center Housing

As part of green-conscious efforts that are growing on campuses around the nation, UC will have 400 recycling bins and seven large, mixed-use bins to collect boxes and other items that students will be discarding as they move in.

UC’s Housing and Food Services also reports that beginning this fall, students and faculty will have another gathering spot to get their coffee fix. A second Starbucks is opening on the third floor of Emery Hall in the College-Conservatory of Music. This Starbucks will have later evening hours, remaining open until 9 p.m. Another Starbucks is located in the Steger Student Life Center, plus Java City gourmet coffee is offered at other college cafes as well as at Tangeman University Center (TUC).

New academic-themed student housing this fall includes the addition of a floor in Dabney Hall for College of Business students, as well as expanding STEMM (science, technology, engineering, math and medicine)-themed housing in the Tudor-style Stratford Heights Complex across from the university on Clifton Avenue.

UC has approximately 30 themed student housing communities among its residence hall floors and the Stratford Heights Complex, including service, WISE (Women in Science and Engineering), college floors, ROTC, communication and media, Greek organizations and students in the University Honors Program for academically talented students.

UC’s Housing & Food Services is also collaborating with the UC Graduate School to assist graduate students searching for housing opportunities surrounding the campus. A website is a resource for graduate students to search for both housing and roommates.

UC’s Morgens Hall and the residence portion of Sciotio Hall remain closed for renovation. Renovations in the planning for Morgens Hall include plans for the exterior of the building to be enclosed in a glass façade, with updated safety, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems as well as renovated bathrooms, kitchens and new furniture. The residence hall was built in 1964. Morgens Hall is expected to reopen for students in fall 2012.
