CCM Opera Wins Record Number of Awards

The National Opera Association has announced the results of its 2009-10 Opera Production Competition, and CCM’s Mainstage and Studio Series of Operas have received some of the competition’s highest honors. Of the 15 prizes awarded, CCM received six.

Competing productions are divided into five judging categories based on the production budget, the size of the program and the level of vocal training of the singers in the cast. In Level V, the top resource category in this competition, CCM’s

Of Mice and Men

(Nicholas Muni, director; Mark Gibson, conductor) received first place, and

The Rape of Lucretia

(Robin Guarino, director; Annunziata Tomaro, conductor) tied for second place. In Level III,

Les mamelles de Tirésias

(Robin Guarino, director; Karl Shymanovitz, conductor) took first place, and

Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda

(Kelvin Chan, director; Annalisa Pappano, conductor) took second place. In Level II,

La Canterina

took second place (Wesley Lawrence, director) and

Gianni Schicchi

took third place (Kenneth Shaw, director).

The NOA’s Opera Production Competition is designed to encourage and reward creative, high quality opera productions in both small professional opera companies and opera training programs. The full list of competition winners is available on

The stunning quality of CCM’s Mainstage Opera Series continues in February 2011 with Mozart’s timeless opera buffa

The Marriage of Figaro

, followed by the Studio Series production of Offenbach’s

The Island of Tulipatan

in March. In addition, CCM will be presenting a concert version of Puccini’s

Turandot

in January featuring CCM’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Brass Choir, Chamber Choir, Chorale and Cincinnati Children’s Choir, including current CCM opera students, local Chinese singers, an alumna and a singer from China.
