From the UC President and UC Board to the public and academic community.

The University of Cincinnati formally announced today that Dr. David Stern is leaving UC to pursue other opportunities.  UC President Gregory H. Williams and the UC Board of Trustees wish to thank Dr. Stern for his many contributions. During Dr. Stern’s tenure at UC, where he served as Dean of the College of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs, the medical campus improved in many ways.  Some of the highlights include:

  • Recruitment of 14 new department chairs and many other leaders to the College of Medicine.
  • Development of Centers-of-Excellence in Cancer (the Cincinnati Cancer Center), Cardiovascular, and Metabolic Disorders (the Diabetes/Obesity Institute) and advancement of the Neuroscience Center-of-Excellence.
  • The first strategic plan that included the College of Medicine, UC Physicians, the University Hospital/health system and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
  • Restructuring of UC Physicians (the practice plan for the physicians in the College of Medicine), combining multiple practice corporations under one umbrella organization so as to streamline business activities and emphasize value-added care, leading UC Physicians to become profitable for the first time in many years.
  • Founding of a Community Advisory Board, and successful recruitment of community leaders to serve on this Board.
  • Securing a Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health.
  • Founding a Department of Medical Education for faculty focused on educational and instructional activities.
  • Designing a two-campus health system (Clifton and West Chester), and developing a business plan for active participation of UC Physicians in West Chester Hospital.

Dr. Stern has been an energetic and productive leader at University of Cincinnati.  The University appreciates his many substantive and measurable contributions.  All parties recognize Dr. Stern’s strategic skills and leadership and wish him great success in the future.
