UC s Sustainability Efforts Earn Kudos

Going green is going great for the University of Cincinnati – so much so that the university has won a number of recent awards for its sustainability efforts.

Recent recognition earned by UC in terms of sustainability include

  • A number 5 finish in the national RecyleMania contest. UC placed in the top five in the competition, along with Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of California-San Diego and Rutgers University. UC competed in the “Gorilla Prize” category, where schools vied to see which could collect the highest gross tonnage of recyclables regardless of campus population. During the eight-week contest, UC recycled 846,068 pounds. RecycleMania 2011 included 630 participating schools.

  • A 2011 Green Business Award for sustainable transportation policies. The contest judged companies and institutions in the areas of water and energy efficiency, indoor environment, materials used, sustainable site and triple bottom line. UC was singled out for its sustainable transportation initiatives, including the Bearcat Bike Share, partnership with Cincinnati METRO that offers discounted transportation on Metro through the UC*Metro Fare Card Program, UC Shuttle System, Electric Vehicle Plug-In Stations and Walk-to-Work Loan Program for home ownership assistance within walking distance of UC.

  • UC is the only Ohio school to make the 2011 list of bike-friendly campuses, a list compiled by the League of American Bicyclists. The organization’s program recognizes colleges and universities that create exceptional environments where bicycling can thrive. Others on that 2011 bike-friendly list were Stanford University, Duke University, University of Chicago, Cornell University and Indiana University.
