Respiratory Care Students from UC Clermont College Take Home the Win in Academic Challenge Bowl

Respiratory Care Students from UC Clermont College won $500 in an academic challenge bowl. The event entitled “Tenacious Trivia” was held recently at the 2011 Explorer Conference at Northern Kentucky University.

This regional educational event for respiratory therapists and students is hosted each spring by Saint Elizabeth Healthcare. The UC Clermont College winning team named: “Holy Spit,” defeated 10 other teams including teams from Cincinnati State, Northern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, and Somerset Community College. The team was comprised of four second year students:  Caleb Arnold, Amanda Doughty, Mike Jaeger, and Justin Meyer.

Each student was awarded a personal trophy while the program received a two-foot high trophy and a check for $500. The money will be donated to the UC Clermont College Allied Health Scholarship Fund.

“This was a very strong team who faced some very stiff competition. They stayed focused and displayed an incredible depth of knowledge,” said Michael Mullarkey, Academic Coordinator for  the Respiratory Care Program at UC Clermont College.

Respiratory care is the evaluation, treatment, and care of patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. Practicing under the direction of a physician, respiratory therapists assume primary responsibility for all therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures. Respiratory therapists also provide complex therapy requiring considerable independent judgment, such as caring for patients on life support in intensive-care units of hospitals.

Respiratory care is an excellent, constantly growing and changing field. The American Association for Respiratory Care predicts the need for respiratory therapists will increase 18% to 26% through 2014. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that respiratory care is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care field. Regional growth has been projected to be even more rapid.
