Theatrical Interpretation: EdD Student Making Arts Enjoyable to All

Dave Coyne, a signed language instructor and a doctoral student studying Urban Education Leadership at the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) was approached by one of his former sign language students with an idea to share his love of the arts.  A friend of the student wanted to invite her family, including her hard of hearing brother, to campus to see the College-Conservatory of Music's (CCM) production of RENT. Coyne wanted to help and set the idea into motion. 

Sign language interpreters in the theater, commonly referred to as “theatrical interpreting,” were not common among CCM performances. When Coyne approached the colleges with this initiative, he received enthusiastic support.  Now, Coyne has established a partnership between CECH sign language interpreting students, CCM, and the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
