2011 ACS Fellows Include Three with Ties to UC

Professors Bruce Ault and Joe Caruso, of the

Department of Chemistry

McMicken College of Arts and Sciences

, were inducted as American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellows along with alumna Diane Schmidt (PhD, ’81) at the 2011 meeting in Denver.

The ACS honored Ault, Caruso and Schmidt for their outstanding achievements in and contributions to science and the profession, as well as service to ACS—the world’s largest scientific society.

Ault has served the ACS in many capacities at the local, regional and national level and his induction as an ACS Fellow recognizes this breadth of service. “I particularly value this recognition because it weighs two factors, professional accomplishment and ACS service. I have worked to have a well-rounded career in research, teaching and service,” he says.

Caruso, a former chair of the Cincinnati ACS Section and general chair of the 2007 Central Regional ACS meeting, also appreciates the all-encompassing nature of being named an ACS Fellow. “This is a nice honor by the ACS because it reflects an above normal participation in ACS affairs as well as the research success of the honoree, which is measured by publications, invited presentations, awards and the impact they’ve had on the profession.”

Schmidt, currently a section head in R&D in the Global Beauty & Grooming unit of Procter & Gamble, served the ACS as a director on the national ACS Board of Directors from 2002-10. She’s also been a member of the Board Executive Committee, chair of the Professional & Member Relations Committee and chair of the Public Affairs & Public Relations Committee.
