UC Clermont Receives $10,500 Grant From Duke Energy for Summer STEM Academy
UC Clermont College received a $10,500 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to fund a STEM Summer Academy. STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The objective of the Summer STEM Academy is to conduct a one-week hands-on program to expose students to a variety of STEM careers and awareness of multiple pathways available. The subjects for the program include an introduction to STEM careers, computer aided design, biology, chemistry, energy, geology, health, information technology and physics. The program will be called the Duke Energy Summer STEM Academy at UC Clermont College.
STEM is important to Duke Energy because we believe it is imperative to sustain a strong future workforce and a sound way to invest in the economic development in our region, said Warren Walker, District Manager of Community and Government Relations at Duke Energy.
This pilot program will be offered to 24 Clermont County students ranging from 13-15 years old. We believe that this Summer STEM Academy will give kids in our area an opportunity that they may not otherwise have to attend a summer camp and experience first-hand what STEM opportunities are in the field, said UC Clermont Dean Gregory Sojka.
Participants will not only get the opportunity to learn in state-of-the-art classrooms during camp but will also visit the Duke Energy Envision Center and other local business partners in the area to see first-hand the type of STEM careers available within the Greater Cincinnati Area.
This Summer STEM program will serve to strengthen our partnership with local school districts and encourage awareness. It will be open to all Clermont County School Districts and all are encouraged to participate.
