UC Horticulture Students Win Scholarships

University of Cincinnati horticulture students Margaret Rigney and Jenny Gast recently received merit scholarships from the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) based on academic achievement, school involvement, extracurricular activities and interest in horticulture.

Rigney, 20, of Perrysburg, Ohio, is a first-year horticulture student in UC’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), while Gast, 52, of Mason, Ohio, expects to graduate in 2013.

Each won a scholarship for $1,000, receiving their awards at the ONLA’s Central Environmental Nursery Trades Show (CENTS) in Columbus, Ohio, an industry trade show and exhibit for those involved in horticulture, including growers, garden centers, landscape architects, landscape contractors, arborists and more.

According to Rigney, the best part of receiving the award was the chance to travel to the CENTS event and see the designs created by landscape architects in Ohio. After earning her baccalaureate degree, Rigney plans to pursue graduate studies in landscape architecture.

For Gast, a master gardener and with her own landscaping business (who also serves as vice president of the Vine Street Hill Cemetery board), the best part about receiving the award was the recognition it provided for her community-based efforts, including her efforts to start community-supported agriculture on land owned by her church.
