Help Students Celebrate Asian Culture at Museum Festival

This weekend the Cincinnati Museum Center will be filled with paper cranes, carp-shaped kites and Japanese toys – and you can take a direct role in getting the fun started.

The center’s Asian Culture Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday (April 14 and 15) at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The festival highlights the histories, arts and traditions of India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. It will feature demonstrations, storytelling, dance performances, workshops, cultural displays and an Asian marketplace with authentic Asian merchandise.

Asuka Yamaki, a senior Geography and Asian Studies double major at the University of Cincinnati, is helping coordinate volunteers for the workshops. She and other students will be helping out at the Japanese booth near the entrance to the Children’s Museum.

“I’ve done this the past two years, and it’s the best place to explore and experience Asian culture,” Yamaki says. “We’ll be making crafts, like paper hats, traditionally used to celebrate Children’s Day, held May 5 in Japan.”

The

Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati

– one of the festival vendors – seeks volunteers to assist with Japanese culture-related workshops at the festival. The society works to build friendship between Japanese and American individuals and businesses through education and understanding, making it a great networking resource for students interested in making connections in the global marketplace.

The society will host workshops on Japanese toys, hand printing koinobori kites and origami. No experience is required to volunteer. Two shifts are available each day of the festival: 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday. To find out how you can help, contact Yamaki at yamakiaa@mail.uc.edu or 513-488-9388.

Festival activities in the museum center rotunda and adjacent areas are free and open to the public. Additional activities within the center’s museums are included with museum admission. The festival begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. For more information on the festival and a complete schedule of events, go to the museum center

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
