New UC Education Program Will Give College Experience to Students with Disabilities

The University of Cincinnati Transition and Access Program (TAP) is a four-year, inclusive program now accepting applications for eligible students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.  Beginning with 10 students in the fall semester (2012), the Intellectual Advancement Center along with the special education program in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, will oversee the launch of the program. This non-degree program option will allow for students to actively engage in the college experience, participating in classes, professional internships and social activities.

“We envision a world where young adults with intellectual disabilities have the option of post-secondary education, as part of their planning from high school to the adult world,” notes Heidi Mendez, director of TAP.

The program, supported by the Mayerson Foundation, will begin with 10 students this fall, and hopes to expand by 10 students each year. “We are proud to have been part of this initiative from the beginning, and are thrilled to be partnering with UC to make this grand vision a reality,” says Donna Mayerson, trustee of the Manuel D. and Rhoda Mayerson Foundation.  “UC has such a strong commitment to this program and we feel fortunate to have had the chance to be part of such a groundbreaking endeavor.”

TAP will provide the opportunity for students to achieve success in a postsecondary experience on a traditional college campus with appropriate supports. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate, and have training and experiences necessary for successful, competitive, employment.

Program requirements include:

  • Cognitive assessment with  documented intellectual disability
  • High school diploma
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Demonstrated interest and desire to pursue education and employment through post-secondary education
  • Additional requirements for eligibility can be found at www.cech.uc.edu/education/tap or by contacting Heidi Mendez.

Applications for the fall semester are
