UC and Hughes Students Team Up to Design Urban Garden Pavilion
Four architecture students from the University of Cincinnatis
School of Architecture and Interior Design, part of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), are teaming with 20 Hughes STEM High School junior-level students in offering a high school design studio. The effort is known as

The UC students architecture graduate student David Mierke and three architecture
students (Tyler Gentry, Jenna Hudson, Emmy Jensen and Joe Russell) are leading a studio with the teens. Local architects and faculty from UC have also contributed to the effort and helped guide the design process.
The studio project focuses on design thinking, the architectural design process, creativity and problem solving.
The Hughes students have taken on exercises to foster critical-thinking skills, including the challenge of creating a three-dimensional object that represented a piece of music. That exercise was comprised of some fast-paced collages and even a little dancing.
Now, students are working in groups to design a final project, an Urban Garden Pavilion for Hughes. The teens will present their design for the urban garden from
6-8:30 p.m., Friday, May 25
, at the Modern Makers Gallery, 2606 Vine St. in Corryville.

UC alum visits campus to teach students about footwear design

A 2011 graduate of design, UC alum Charley Hudak has seen his career trajectory go from intern to creative director for Tiger Woods' new athletic footwear brand, Sun Day Red. While he may run with the biggest cat in golf, Hudak doesn't forget his Bearcat roots and comes back each summer to teach youth about footwear design at DAAP Camps.
