UC Business Students Get Fashion Tips for Career Success

Nearly 230 students from the Carl H. Lindner College of Business received tips on how to make a good first impression and dress like a professional in the business world at the first annual Dress To Impress Fashion Fair event at TUC on May 9.

The career services team in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business created the event to “reinforce what professionalism looks like and how to prepare for it,” says Ashley Walker, career services program coordinator.

To help them prepare, the career services team at the Lindner College invited more than 20 companies to share advice with students and display images on “what professionalism looks like in their company,” Walker says. Companies were also encouraged to highlight career opportunities.

The event also included food, makeovers, a tie-tying and handshake demonstrations, 50 raffle prizes of gift cards and business suites, and a game sponsored by Delta Sigma Pi, the professional business fraternity that challenged students to choose which outfits were business professional or business casual.

Two students, Kayla Flemming, BBA ’14, and Brooks Ulbrich, BBA ‘15, won personal shopping experiences, a Fifth Third Bank donation that paid for a personal shopper to select business attire at Macy’s.

“There was a lot of buzz around the volume of giveaways,” says Joy Murphy, career services director of corporate relations. “Cintas Corporation gave nine suits away that were made out of recycled water bottles and are machine washable.”

With 185 students arriving in the first 45 minutes and most participants staying until the end, the event was such a success, Walker says. Organizers are now gathering survey information from companies and students to plan for next year.  Under consideration, a live fashion show, Walker says.
