UC Business Professor Receives International Teaching Award

David Rogers, an associate professor in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business, likes to sum up his passion for teaching Operations Research/Management Science (ORMS) in cumulative terms.

Over 32 (27 at UC) years, Rogers has taught 173 sections of 30 courses over 32 years at three universities and continues to enjoy “strengthening skills and preparing students to excel in their future employment,” he says.

This passion, detailed by numerous nominations letters from faculty, students and business partners, earned him the 2012 INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Prize for the Teaching of ORMS Practice. Rogers received the

award

at the group’s annual meeting in Phoenix on October 14, 2012.

Rogers has taught OR/MS at all levels, from undergraduate and graduate to unique PhD topics that allow for specialized instruction. Through teaching, Rogers has introduced students to optimization modeling and paired them with local businesses for real-world case studies. He’s also helped students examine research strategies, career searches and “anything related to their ascension into the ORMS profession,” he says.

In return for his teaching distinction, Rogers received numerous letters of support from students and businesses alike toward his nomination.

Doctoral candidate David Pasquel, MSBA ’11, praised Rogers for his classroom preparation and presentation, and “how to apply business analytics and organization management theory to real-world scenarios.”

“I can truly say that his part in my education has enhanced my opportunities for learning and success,” Pasquel says.

UC is one of two universities to claim two faculty award winners. Jeff Camm, professor and head of the Department of Operations, Business Analytics and Information Systems (OBAIS) in the Lindner College of Business, won the award in 2006, and alumnus Jim Cochran, PhD ’97, also won the award in 2008.
