CEAS Honors its Finest Achievers

 Each month this academic year, the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science recognizes one of its junior or senior students as an Engineer of the Month. This award honors the college’s strongest achievers in the classroom, on the job, in professional organizations, around campus and in the community.

This distinction is a testament to the college’s commitment to excellence at every level. “Our vision is to produce outstanding engineers and technologists,” states Interim Dean Teik C. Lim. “These students are among the finest people and top achievers the college and the university have to offer and their remarkable contributions serve as an inspiration for all of us.”

Each of the following high caliber students has demonstrated an extraordinary level of achievement and excellence in the classroom, on the job, and in campus and community life and has received strong co-op endorsements from faculty as well as employers. “It is my great honor to announce that each of the following engineers of the month is receiving a $500 scholarship in addition to a public recognition of their achievements.”

The Engineers of the Month during the first semester are:

• AUG   Rebecca Mathews, Mechanical Engineering – ACCEND, 3.87 GPA
• SEP     Brandon Cook,   Aerospace Engineering – ACCEND, 3.98 GPA
• OCT    Michelle Blomer,   Chemical Engineering, 3.86 GPA
• NOV   Britney Bogard*,   Computer Science – ACCEND, 3.80 GPA
• DEC    Bejamin Ko, Biomedical Engineering, 3.92 GPA
  

Not only have these students consistently maintained a high GPA, but also a high level of community involvement.
 
Rebecca Matthews has served as a chair for Relay for Life, a fundraiser to support the American Cancer Society’s education, advocacy and research programs, and continues to donate her time to the organization. She also contributed to the success of the Mars Curiosity Rover during her co-op experience working with NASA.

Brandon Cook has served as a community service chair setting up events for places like the Ronald McDonald House and Cincinnati Community Outreach. He also participates in Circle K International, where he facilitates community service events throughout the year.

Michelle Blomer acts as president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) where she recently worked on building and reestablishing the co-op review. She also lends her time as a mentor with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Britney Bogard donates her free time volunteering at the Cincinnati Computer Cooperative where she helps to recycle or refurbish used computers that are then provided to underprivileged families.

Benjamin Ko has given his time to elementary children as a fourth grade tutor. Through Benjamin’s leadership, a dormant student chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) has become a dynamic and popular student group.

“WE ENGINEER BETTER™ starts with our training the next generation and we are proud to honor our leaders,” said Lim. “In order to ensure that all of our Engineers of the Month for the year have the opportunity to appear before the entire community, I am also very pleased to announce that February 12, 2013 is CEAS Night at 5/3rd Arena and our Engineers of the Month will be honored during a special half-time ceremony during the UC - Villanova Basketball game,” he said. “I am hopeful that our college and the university as a whole will pack the arena.”

The college salutes each student on their selection as Engineer of the Month and congratulate each for their exemplary achievements!
