Castellini Companies to Receive UC Goering Center Family Business Hall of Fame Award

The University of Cincinnati’s Goering Center for Family & Private Business will present the Castellini Companies with its Greater Cincinnati Family Business Hall of Fame Award at the 14th annual Family & Private Business Awards at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Cincinnati Music Hall.

In addition to the Hall of Fame award, six other Cincinnati businesses also will be honored at the annual ceremony for implementing best business practices as defined by the Goering Center.

“We chose to honor the Castellini Companies with the Family Business Hall of Fame Award because of both the company’s and the family’s long-term community impact, through their commitment to community service, growth of employment and overall community image,” said Larry Grypp, president of the UC Goering Center for Family & Private Business.

The Castellini Company began business on the banks of the Ohio River in 1896, relying on the river and railways to transport produce. Over time, the company portfolio grew to include transportation, warehousing and leasing services and became the Castellini Group of Companies — one of the largest distributors of fruits, vegetables and floral items in the country.

Today, the company transports more than 3,000 different items across the country and remains one of the oldest and most trusted companies in the produce business. The company also has maintained a century-old tradition of community good will through philanthropy and community service.

The family’s business holdings have expanded over time to include the Cincinnati Sports Club; Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa; various investments in venture capital, private equity, real estate and public equities; and a stewardship of the Cincinnati Reds. Bob Castellini is principal owner and chief executive officer of the ball club, and son Phil Castellini is the chief operating officer.

Four generations of the Castellini family have made a significant impact in Greater Cincinnati. Bob Castellini, current chairman of the Castellini Group of Companies, continues his grandfather’s, father’s and eldest sister’s (Joseph J. “JJ” Castellini, Robert H. Castellini and Claire Thornton Wilger, respectively) work at the family company and legacy in making Greater Cincinnati a better place to live, work and play. Bob’s sons, Phil and Robert S. Castellini, fourth-generation executives, are also active in the family businesses and philanthropic endeavors.
