Lindner Graduate Business Students Take Second-Place Honors at International Simulation Competition
Three UC graduate students from the Carl H. Lindner College of Business took second-place honors on June 12 at the fifth International ERPsim (Enterprise Resource Planning) competition at HEC Montreal in Quebec, Canada.
Dan Beach, Kim Vandegrift and Pranav Nagpal, all graduate students in the MS-IS program, used a continuous-time simulation with a real-life ERP system (SAP ECC 6.0 software) to run a German dairy products reseller business. Lindner adjunct professor Kyle Snyder used the simulation software game as a hands-on educational tool in his graduate-level ERP II course. Beach, Vandegrift and Nagpal surfaced as the winners in Snyders class and agreed to compete at the international competition.
In the intense, fast-paced and highly competitive simulation, the students had to operate a virtual business over four simulated quarters. Through the ERP software, they had to interact with suppliers and customers (by sending and receiving orders); deliver products; and complete the cash-to-cash cycle while keeping an eye on the production, sales and procurement processes. Students used standard and customized SAP reports to analyze their transactional data to make business decisions and ensure profitability.
The competition began with 19 participating universities from around the world. Lindner students then competed against 10 finalists to finish second behind Central Michigan University.
