End-of-Summer Stats: A Snapshot of the August 2013 Graduating Class

According to the University of Cincinnati’s Office of Institutional Research,

2,130 students

applied to graduate as of the end of summer term 2013.

The Class of August 2013 is earning

• 216 associate degrees
• 696 bachelor’s degrees
• 1,056 master’s degrees
• 170 doctoral degrees (These doctoral graduates will participate in December's Commencement ceremony.)
  

TOTAL: 2,138 degrees

(some students are earning more than one degree)

These numbers are higher than those of some of UC’s historic August Commencements. For instance, in 1968,

degrees were awarded. But just like now, about half of those were master’s degrees: 345 to be exact. By 1972, the number of August degrees awarded had climbed to 1,200.

The class of August 2013 includes

2,130 students

eligible to graduate:

Geographic breakdown

• Over half  (1,287) are from Ohio.

• The rest come from 42 states and the District of Columbia as well as 50 other countries outside the United States.

• About one quarter of the graduates, 522, are graduating from distance learning programs, and more than half of the grads (1,526) took at least one distance-learning course.

• Fifty-two of the graduates came to UC from Cincinnati Public Schools.

• 413 transferred to UC from other institutions as undergraduates.

• 373 transitioned to UC’s Uptown Campus from UC Clermont College or UC Blue Ash College.

Gender ratios

• More than half (1,220 or 57.3 percent) are women.

• Men represent 910 grads, or 42.7 percent.

Age range

• The average age of degree recipients is 29.6

• The young degree recipient (associate’s degree) is 18

• The oldest bachelor’s degree recipient is 60.

• The oldest master’s degree recipient is 64.

Ethnicities
Just over 15 percent (322 students) are minorities.

• Black,  7.7 percent.
• Asian, 3.9 percent.
• Hispanic, 3 percent.
• American Indian or Native Hawaiian or from the Pacific Islands, less than 1 percent.
• Multiracial, 1.2 percent.
• White, 67.8 percent. 
• Graduates from another country outside the United States, 12.2 percent of grads.
  

Institutional aid

• More than half (1,122 or 52.7 percent) of degree recipients received some form of UC institutional aid in order to complete their studies.

STEMM

(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medical) degrees

• A little less than half of the degrees awarded, 1,049, are in STEMM or science, technology, engineering, math and medical fields.

Honors

• 30 grads will be awarded degrees summa cum laude, having earned a grade point average between 3.9 and a perfect 4.0

• 43 grads will be awarded degrees magna cum laude, having earned a GPA between 3.75 and 3.8999

• 59 grads will be awarded degrees cum laude, having earned a GPA between 3.6 and 3.7499
