Participation in UC s First MOOC Skyrockets into Thousands

Participation in UC’s first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) offering has exceeded expectations, drawing more than 2,000 people from more than 50 countries around the world to a course that has captured a place in history as UC’s largest class.

Registration for the free Innovation and Design Thinking course, a joint endeavor of the Carl H. Lindner College of Business and UC’s College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS)—continues as new participants can join the class at any time. Previous class content is available for students to review 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The UC MOOC goes a step beyond the traditional MOOC by offering two free credit hours to anyone who takes the class, fulfills the requirements and enrolls in the Lindner MBA program or the CEAS Master of Engineering program.

The Innovation and Design Thinking course is co-taught by Lindner’s Drew Boyd, assistant professor-educator of marketing and executive director of the Master of Science in Marketing, and Jim Tappel, assistant professor-educator at CEAS.

The course is designed to appeal to innovation practitioners from all backgrounds as the class will teach students to master the tools necessary to generate new ideas and how to quickly transform those concepts into viable new products and services.

The online class utilizes weekly lecturettes, assigned readings, live chats and guest speakers. The guest speakers line-up includes Cindy Tripp, formerly the director of Global Design Thinking at Procter & Gamble; Dr. Michael Clem, vice president R&D, medical at Kaleidoscope; Elizabeth Edwards, CEO at Metro Innovation and author of “Startup: The Complete Handbook for Launching a Company for Less;” and Doug Ladd, chief marketing officer, EndoChoice.
