Lindner College of Business Student Earns Sales Award at National Competition

Sam Bores, BBA '15, was awarded a Most Valuable Player award at the National Team Selling Competition at Indiana University on Oct. 10 and 11, 2013.

Bores, a member of the UC Varsity Sales Team at the Carl H. Lindner College of Business, is the first UC student to earn the award, making him one of the best of three sellers in the competition that included 80 sales students from 20 schools around the country. Bores was selected for his ability to handle buyer objections.

Bores, along with UC Varsity Sales Team members Paul Reitz, BBA '15; Jared Philpot, BBA '13; and Tanner Yates, BBA '16, made a pitch for a brand of craft beer to buyers from a convenience store chain that did not stock adult beverages. The team, with a 12th-place finish, competed on business plan factors that included product distribution, positioning, promotion, advertising and store display. The team was credited for having the only life-sized product display materials with their presentation and a brewmaster on their sales team.

The competition offers students an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world selling situation. The UC Sales Team will compete in three additional competitions:

  • November 2013: International Collegiate Sales Competition at Florida State University, Tallahassee (Lauren Pflum and Sam Bores)
  • February 2014: Keg of Nails, University of Louisville
  • March 2014: National Collegiate Sales Competition, Kennesaw State University, Atlanta
