December Degrees: See the Stats Related to the Graduating Class of December 2013

The University of Cincinnati celebrates its December Commencement at

9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14

, in Fifth Third Arena. In that ceremony, associate and bachelor’s degrees will be awarded. 

An earlier recognition ceremony, the Doctoral Hooding and Master’s Recognition Ceremony, will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 13, also in Fifth Third Arena.

UC’s Office of Institutional Research reports that a total of 2,167 students applied for graduation in fall 2013, as calendar year 2013 closes out. These graduates will earn a total of 2,186 degrees, as some students earn more than one degree.


The December 2013 class is earning

  • 208 associate degrees
  • 987 bachelor’s degrees
  • 855 master’s degrees
  • 136 doctoral and professional degrees

Geographic breakdown

  • Of those graduating, 65 percent (1,406) are from Ohio, in fact representing 69 Ohio counties. The rest come from 48 countries and 48 states.

  • A majority of the students – 1,660 or 76 percent – have taken at least one distance-learning course, and 527 earned their degrees via UC distance-learning programs. The distance-learning December degree earner from farthest away is from Guam (but will not be present at Commencement).

  • Seventy-one of the graduates came to UC from Cincinnati Public Schools.

Gender ratios

  • More than half the graduating students are women: 55.8 percent are women, and 44.2 percent are men.

Age range

  • The average age of the graduates is 29. The youngest graduate is 18. The oldest graduate is aged 65. One student, Gloria Parks, a graduate earning a bachelor’s degree in substance abuse counseling from UC’s College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services, is celebrating her 57th birthday on this Dec. 14, which is also her Commencement day.


Ethnicities

About 14 percent (13.9 percent) or 301 students are minorities, including

  • Black, 9 percent
  • Asian, 2.4 percent
  • Hispanic, 2.1 percent
  • American Indian or Native Hawaiian or from the Pacific Islands, less than 1 percent 

Others include

  • Multiracial, 1.1 percent
  • White, 66.6 percent
  • Graduates from another country outside the United States, 13.5 percent


Institutional aid

  • About 63 percent of the graduating students received some sort of institutional aid from UC in order to complete their degrees.

STEMM degrees

  • Slightly less than half the students – 935 – are receiving degrees in fields represented by the STEMM (science, technology, engineering, math and medical) disciplines.

Hourly retail workers are now wearing police-like body cameras
