2013 National Book Award Finalist to Speak at UC

Author Rachel Kushner will speak at UC at 7 p.m., Feb. 3, in McMicken Hall, Room 127, as part of University of Cincinnati’s Visiting Writers Series.

Kushner has received national attention since the publishing of her most recent book, “The Flamethrowers,” including being named a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award. Her previous book, “Telex from Cuba,” was also nominated for a National Book Award.

CityBeat recently interviewed her about the success of her book and her unique style of writing.

“For me, writing is kind of a way of engaging with the world,” Kushner told CityBeat. "Everything that I experience in my life and is of interest to me is only of interest to me in so far as it’s either going to transmute into something in my book or it isn’t.”

The Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences Creative Writing Program. The series brings distinguished authors to campus each semester to interact with students and to give a public reading.

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
