CEAS Night at Fifth Third Arena is Approaching

The University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) now has its own designated night at Fifth Third Arena—Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, has been designated CEAS Night at Fifth Third Arena as the UC men’s basketball team takes on the UCF Knights at 9 p.m. This will make the second year that the college has been highlighted at Fifth Third Arena and the night’s events are sure to top last year’s.

CEAS Interim Dean Teik C. Lim says, “This is our big night to shine. We’re showing the campus and the world that at UC, WE ENGINEER BETTER™, and at CEAS, we do EVERYTHING BETTER!”

Special ticket rates are available for CEAS faculty, staff, alumni, students’ parents and friends at the

Official Cincinnati Bearcats Online Ticket Marketplace

. Details for the promotion price were included in the listserv email alert and invitation.

Prior to the game, those attending will have a chance to see SIERRA (‘Surveillance for Intelligent Emergency Response Robotic Aircraft’) and the UC Robotics Club’s traveling robot and quadracopters in the concourse. Throughout the game, there will be special presentations as CEAS recognizes its finest achievers—all 12 Engineers of the Month for academic year 2013-14—along with some of the top high school professionals within the college’s signature Dual Enrollment and CEEMS programs.

Beginning in August, CEAS selects an Engineer of the Month who demonstrates excellence in the classroom, success in their co-op assignments, and leadership through extracurricular activities on campus and/or in the community as they have found the balance needed to be leaders and exemplary scholars. Look for these top-notch students as they take center court during the game!

CEAS Night will also pay tribute to the award-winning

dual enrollment program

, coordinated by Eugene Rutz, CEAS academic director. The program is done in collaboration with 12 local high schools and is completed via distance learning using Sonic Foundry, Inc.’s Mediasite, an enterprise video platform. The UC program started in 2007 when four high schools—Harrison, Mother of Mercy, Mt. Notre Dame, and Princeton High Schools—began offering a CEAS introduction to engineering course to seniors. Currently, 13 schools and over 500 students participate in the program. High Schools participating in the program include: Anderson, Edgewood, Harrison, Kings, Madison Plains, Mother of Mercy, Mt. Notre Dame, Oak Hills, Princeton, Roger Bacon, St. Ursula Academy, Turpin, and Ursuline Academy.

To date, the program has experienced success in increasing the college’s engineering enrollment, especially among female and minority students. Additionally, studies have consistently shown that individuals who participate in a dual enrollment program such as this are often more likely to succeed in a college setting.  It also provides students who are unsure of their ability to be successful in engineering with the opportunity to participate in engineering courses prior to enrolling in a degree program at a university.

Also being recognized during CEAS Night are some of the top high school professionals working with the college in the

CEEMS

(Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Mathematics and Science) program. The program is designed to advance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education throughout the tri-state. CEEMS, led by UC in partnership with 14 school districts, works to meet the growing need for engineering educated teachers who are equipped to provide learners with opportunities to achieve the recently revised Ohio New Learning Standards: K-12 Science juxtaposed with Universal Skills (21st Century Learning Skills).  These standards are centered in real world applications—connections to engineering.  To address this need, CEEMS offers professional development pathways to teacher preparedness.

Save the date. Pack the stands on Jan. 23 in support of CEAS’ big night. The night promises to be full of engineering excitement and basketball fever!
