University of Cincinnati Observances Pay Tribute to Martin Luther King

The University of Cincinnati honors the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the program, "Expanding the Movement: Extending MLK Beyond Race."

The program, free and open to the public, begins at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the MainStreet Cinema of Tangeman University Center (TUC).

Eric Watford, a program coordinator for

UC’s African American Cultural and Resource Center (AACRC)

, says the event will celebrate King’s legacy by highlighting his philosophies and beliefs that were less popularized, as well as broaden the scope of racial issues.

The keynote speaker is Antonio M. Shelton, principal at Indian Hill High School and adjunct instructor for the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH). He was the first African American to be appointed principal at Indian Hill High School. He has also worked as a facilitator for UC’s summer Administrator Development Academy for students pursuing careers as school administrators.

The program is sponsored by the AACRC, Ethnic Programs and Services, the UC Women’s Center, Resident Education and Development, the UC LGBTQ Center and the CECH Student Services Center.

University offices are closed on Jan. 20 for the Martin Luther King holiday.

The AACRC at UC first opened in September 1991 to create a welcoming environment for African-American students as they adjust to college life.

The center reopened last January

after undergoing six months of renovations totaling $325,000 that more than doubled the center’s original capacity.

UC Health Observance Jan. 17

The College of Medicine and UC Health will host the

42nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Ceremony, "If Not You—Then Who?” at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17, in Kresge Auditorium.

Tonya Matthews, president and CEO of the Michigan Science Center, will serve as keynote speaker, with entertainment provided by Mother Wizdom and the band Smoooth.

During the event, Lee Ann Liska, UC Medical Center president and CEO, will present the Humanitarian Award and UCMC vice president of human resources Clarence Pauley will announce the recipients of the MLK Scholarship Grant.
