UC Blue Ash Announces New Policy for Freshman Students

The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College is announcing a new policy that will go into effect for freshman students who enroll for the 2014-15 academic year. It requires that all freshmen earn at least 24 credits before they are allowed to enroll in a class at the University of Cincinnati’s campuses in Clifton or Batavia.

The new policy was created to help support the success of incoming freshmen. A small but growing trend has developed as more students are being referred to UC Blue Ash after initially seeking admission to the Clifton campus but not qualifying academically. Some of these students were still finding a way to take some or all of their classes in Clifton. Their grades often suffered as a result.

“We have a formula that helps students really make the adjustment to college-level courses. They benefit from our smaller class sizes, increased opportunities for one-on-one instruction, and free academic support services,” said Cady Short-Thompson, dean of UC Blue Ash. “We want our students to take our classes. We see so many students who have doubts about whether they can succeed in college, but then thrive in this environment and go on to successful academic careers in Clifton.”

Exceptions to the policy will be considered for special circumstances, but they will be rare and will require approval.

Incoming freshman at UC Blue Ash will still be allowed to live in the residence halls in Clifton. They can also continue to take advantage of the free shuttles that travel between the Blue Ash and Clifton campuses Monday through Friday.

“Our students are UC students, that doesn’t change,” said Dean Short-Thompson. “They can participate in student government, Greek life, recreational sports and many other activities available at our Clifton campus. This policy helps ensure that students who are referred to our college take our classes and get the support they need to adapt to the rigors of a high-quality academic institution.”
