Lindner College of Business Boasts Top Two Undergraduates in National Investment Competition

Lindner College of Business students Joel Cohen, BBA ’17, finished No. 1 and senior Colin Fogel, BBA ’14, finished No. 2 in the nation in the undergraduate category of

2013-14 All-America Student Analyst Competition. Cohen’s financial insight in the competition earned him a noontime interview on CNBC’s "Halftime Report" on May 6, 2014.

In its second year, the online competition ran from Sept. 3, 2013, until Jan. 31, 2014, and pitted undergraduate and graduate students from all over the U.S. against one another in the hunt for investment returns using a professional-style trading engine called Alphaseal.com.

Using the Russell 3000 Index as a benchmark, student portfolio performances were measured by six investment factors — net benchmark outperformance, volatility, balance sheet impact, net exposure impact, long alpha and short alpha. Only 345 students outperformed the Russell benchmark, which gained 9.3 percent over the course of the competition.

More than 2,100 students from 82 schools participated in the competition, three times as many as last year’s inaugural year, with more than double the number of schools participating.

UC concluded the competition with four students finishing in the Top 100. They are:

• Joel Cohen finished No. 1 in undergraduate category, fifth overall and ranked 10th in the Net Benchmark Outperformance (NBO).

• Colin Fogel finished No. 2 in the undergraduate category, came in sixth overall and was among 12 students who beat the index by more than 50 basis points on an average daily basis. He was first in the Long Alpha category and third in the healthcare sector competition and 12th on the NBO list.

• Michael Green, BBA ’17, finished 41st overall. 

• Kameron E. Meeting, finished 68th overall.
