Ohio's Best Journalism Awards Honor UC Faculty and Alumni
Congratulations are in order for a number of University of Cincinnati faculty and alumni who have been honored by the
Society of Professional Journalists
in the 2014 Ohios Best Journalism Awards. The winners were announced July 25. Jeffrey Blevins, who heads the UC Journalism Department, said the SPJ recognition was a testament to the professional quality of the winners and of the journalism department itself.
It is truly wonderful to see both our alumni and faculty achieve at an award-winning level professionally, said Blevins. I am especially excited for Jenny Wohlfarth who does so much for our department, as our undergraduate studies director, as a national award-winning adviser to our student SPJ chapter, and as an outstanding teacher. I am just amazed at how much service she provides our department while continuing to excel in the professional arena. Jenny is one of the most hardworking, trustworthy and selfless persons I've ever known and a top-notch professional."
Wohlfarth won the first-place award for best newsmaker profile for
her profile of Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard
in last years March edition of Cincinnati Magazine. The story has also been recognized by the Cincinnati Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Other UC faculty and alumni honored include:
- Journalism affiliate faculty member Hagit Limor - first place for best consumer reporting for her investigation of autographed memorabilia for local Fox affiliate WXIX-TV.
- Journalism alum and adjunct instructor Tom Demeropolis - second place for exploratory journalism for his work at the Cincinnati Business Courier.
- Journalism alum Kareem Elgazzar (for WCPO digital) - second in Best of Show/best online still photographer, and both first- and second-place awards in the best feature photography category and the best photography category.

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
