Hoxworth Mourns Passing of Former Director, Dr. Thomas Zuck

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, sadly announces the death last Friday of  Thomas F. Zuck, MD.

Thomas F. Zuck, MD, past director of Hoxworth Blood Center and professor of transfusion medicine at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2014. 

Dr. Zuck began his career as a political science major from Carleton College in 1955. Soon afterwards, he was awarded his law degree from Yale Law School in 1958. In 1963, he obtained his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and began a long and distinguished military career in which his interests followed the science of transfusion medicine. He received numerous honors and awards during his military service,  serving as commander of the Letterman Army Institute of Research, chief of the Department of Pathology, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and deputy director of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.  At the end of his military career, he was "loaned" to the FDA to serve as the cirector, Blood and Blood Products Division, Office of Biologics Research and Review. In addition to his distinguished military career, he served in numerous scientific and professional societies that included service as president of the American Association of Blood Banks and Editor-in-Chief of Transfusion.

Following his retirement from military service in 1987, Dr. Zuck came to Hoxworth Blood Center where he continued his service as a leader in transfusion medicine. He served as president of the Council of Community Blood Centers (now America's Blood Centers), a member of the FDA's HIV working group and the College of American Pathologists Committee on AIDS and Infectious Body Fluids and as chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the Retrovirus Epidemiology in Blood Donors Study (REDS).  Towards the end of his career he was honored with multiple awards that recognized his achievement in the field of transfusion medicine to include his appointment as a Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh; the W. Quinn Jordan Memorial Award (AABB) and the creation of the ABC's Thomas F. Zuck Lifetime Achievement Award, an award that recognizes individuals for a lifetime of dedication to community blood banking. By the time of his retirement in 1999, Dr. Zuck had authored more than 70 scientific articles, multiple book chapters and numerous abstracts contributing to the field of transfusion medicine.
