Co-Op Coming to Communication
The McMicken College of Arts and Sciences announced today a new partnership between the Department of Communication and the University of Cincinnati office of Professional Practice and Experiential Learning (ProPEL) to offer co-op learning opportunities for select communication majors beginning in the 2015-16 academic year.
I know the potential our students have and Im excited for them to bring their talent into area businesses, said Steve Depoe, communication department head. The work we do in the classroom comes to life when applied to real-world challenges.
Students who are interested will fill out an application that will be reviewed based on fulfillment of prerequisite courses, GPA and other factors. Up to 30 students will be selected for Fall 2015.
Im happy to see us add this opportunity for students as part of the McMicken experience were offering throughout our college, said A&S Dean Ken Petren.
Co-op was invented at UC in 1906. Now, more than 100 years and 43 countries later, generations of students worldwide have followed our lead. UC's co-op program is listed among the nation's best in "US News & World Report" rankings.
Communication is re-joining the co-op program after an absence of more than a decade. This new initiative is one of many ways the department, its faculty members and alumni are working together to build value for BA and MA degrees.
I have always wanted to co-op because of how great it would look on my resume and I get paid for it, unlike most internships, said Allee Martin, a UC communication student.
Alumnus Chuck Helmes (BA, 1990), is now vice president of marketing at Vantiv Corp.
I was a co-op student, and I completed a rotation with an advertising company in Northern Kentucky," he said. "It was great to get off campus for a quarter and experience a full-time job related to my major. Valuable experience, plus good for the resume.
