Chemistry Professor Nationally Recognized for Service

Distinguished Research Professor William R. Heineman of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry was recently recognized by the American Chemical Society for his service in the advancement of analytical chemistry.

The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual who has substantially enhanced the field of analytical chemistry through professional activities such as teaching, writing, research and administration.

Heineman received this award as a result of his contributions to the advancement of analytical chemistry through a combination of writing, research and considerable service. Heineman has coauthored and co-edited a number of books including Laboratory Techniques in Electroanalytical Chemistry and Experiments in Instrumental Methods. Additionally, Heineman has published over 450 research papers and book chapters and has been awarded five patents. Heineman’s research primarily focuses on spectroelectrochemistry and on biosensors.

Heineman has contributed significantly to the American Chemical Society’s Division of Analytical Chemistry where he has held a number of elected positions including treasurer, councilor, and chair. Heineman has been recognized by the American Chemical Society before:  in 1997 with the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 2009 when he was honored as one of the 162 members in the inaugural class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society.  A cofounder of the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry, Heineman was Chair of the Interim Board of Directors that organized the Society in 1983 and its first Chair.

Heineman has organized or co-organized over 35 symposia and conferences around the world including the 40th Annual Summer Symposium on Analytical Chemistry on Biosensors and two Gordon Research Conferences.  He has also served the analytical chemistry community as a journal editor and a member of journal advisory and editorial boards.

“I feel incredibly honored to be receiving the Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Analytical Chemistry,” Heineman said. “It’s nice to receive recognition for a career’s worth of service, research, and teaching.”

Heineman will receive the Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Analytical Chemistry at the National American Chemical Society meeting in Boston this summer where he will speak in a special Awards Symposium.
