UC Earns Top Marks from International Students

International enrollment is on the rise at the University of Cincinnati and a recent independent survey of thousands of students across the globe offers insights into why.

UC earned high marks in the latest International Student Barometer (ISB) survey, which ranks the perceptions and experiences of students worldwide.

The survey, released this spring by International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate), evaluated the responses of 142,445 international students from 172 universities — including 23 in the U.S. — in 18 countries.

UC

ranked ninth in the nation and 48th in the world overall

, with 90 percent of students surveyed reporting they are satisfied or very satisfied with their UC experience. In 2014, UC

ranked 56th overall and ninth in the U.S.

 

A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS

The ISB organizes its data into four categories: Learning, Living, Support and Arrival.  It asks respondents to rate their satisfaction in more than 80 sub-categories, ranging from the welcome they receive from the university and social activities to the quality of the instruction and support offered by UC.

Nationally, UC ranked tops for offering the best “Welcome” and “Sports Facilities.” UC also saw a strong jump in its “Faith Provision” category, going from being ranked in the bottom three nationally in 2015 to a top place finish this year.  

 

UC ranked second among its national peers in categories of “Virtual Learning,” Campus Buildings,” “Bank Account” and “First Night” experiences. It placed in the top three nationally in categories of “Physical Library,” “Technology,” “Arrival Overall” and “Social Activities.”

 

Internationally, UC ranked among the top 10 in the following categories:

UC's Academic Master Plan emphasizes the importance of global engagement and diversity and inclusion. International enrollment for fall 2015 was 3,175 graduate and undergraduate students, up more than 48 percent from 2,139 students in 2010.  Students from China and India make up the majority of UC's international population.

Among the international participants in the survey were University of Adelaide (Australia), University College London, University of Edinburgh (Scotland), and the University of Oxford.

Other U.S. schools included in the survey were Arizona State University, George Washington University, Gonzaga University, Miami University, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, Montana State University and University of Nebraska.

Zachary Jarrell came to the University of Cincinnati in 2019 to pursue a degree in statistics. In 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. For many undergraduates, the journey through college rarely takes the expected track. Detours happen, and majors change. When plans switch up, it can be helpful to a student’s success to find support. For Jarrell, it was the people he worked alongside in the journalism department who helped him on his journey. It has left a lasting impression on his life so far, guiding him to multiple internships as an undergraduate, real-world experience in prominent news outlets, and eventually a successful career in the highly competitive field of journalism.
