Learn about Tobacco-Cessation Classes at Four Introductory Sessions
With a new school year soon to begin, the University of Cincinnati is tobacco free.
To help employees and students who would like to try and quit tobacco, the university is offering numerous resources, including tobacco-free cessation classes. The classes as well as other initiatives are being offered thanks to a $20,000 grant from the American Cancer Society and CVS.
To learn more about the tobacco-cessation classes and other resources, three introductory sessions are being offered to employees and students at the end of August. They will be held:
- Monday, Aug. 28, noon-1 p.m., Room 743, Steger Student Life Center, West Campus (Uptown Campus).
- Tuesday, Aug. 29, noon-1 p.m., Room 244, University Hall, East Campus (Uptown Campus).
- Wednesday, Aug. 30, noon-1 p.m., Room 105, McDonough Hall (UC Clermont College).
- Thursday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m.-noon, Room 100, Walters Hall (UC Blue Ash College)
The grant was awarded to UCs
, in partnership with the university Human Resources
initiative. This Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative grant provides funding to colleges and universities to start and promote tobacco-free campus initiatives.
The Student Wellness Center and Be Well plan to use the funding to promote Tobacco Free UC, the new tobacco-free policy at the University of Cincinnati. UC became a completely tobacco free campus on May 1, 2017. The grant award will be used not only for tobacco-cessation classes for students and employees but also for a social media campaign, give-aways to publicize the policy as well as other resources for students and employees.
We are so excited about the opportunities this grant funding will provide, says Brandy Reeves, director of the Student Wellness Center. The American Cancer Society grant will allow us to promote the new tobacco-free policy to students and employees and share resources available to help people quit tobacco.
The grant was obtained with assistance from UCs James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy, and according to Dean Neil MacKinnon. He stated that CVS and the CVS Foundation are important partners for the college and the university, adding, CVS demonstrated leadership by removing tobacco products from all of their pharmacies, and they are helping UC demonstrate leadership in helping us provide a tobacco-free campus.
Tobacco-cessation classes are free for students and employees and will be offered several times throughout Fall semester. The Fresh Start program is four weeks long and participants will receive a free resource packet and quit kit. For more information and to register, visit
